Johannesburg Social Movement Calls for Mashaba’s Removal

With only about six months in office the new Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba is under fire.

Mashaba is accused of not fulfilling his promises and prioritising impressing the Democratic Alliance (DA) and not community members of Johannesburg.

The Johannesburg Social Movement wants Mashaba to be fired immediately.

The movement says Mashaba is trying to destroy the programmes of the former administration without offering alternatives.

Mashaba has received a lot of criticism for firing former MMC Anthony Still.

The JSM now want him to be shown the door and the EFF leaders to intervene.

Spokesperson Tshepang Mokgatla says: “What they were promising our people of greater Johannesburg is not what they are actually delivering on.”

“This thing is creating a frustration for us on the ground, we are not a political party but we are appealing to all political parties in council to make a conscious decision.”

Among Mashaba’s plans was to turn the economy of the city around, an end to the jozi@work programme. However, the news has not been well received.

In its response the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it’s not in coalition with the DA and is not governing.

It says if the JSM was not trying to cover up corruption, it would have approached the party and not address them through the media.

Attempts to get a response from the DA were unsuccessful.

The JSM says it will march to the Premier’s office on Thursday to hand over a memorandum.

It will then march to the council, where a meeting will be underway.
